Powell’s contract came to an end after the World Cup in Qatar and he is not expected to remain in post.

Hasselbaink’s last job in football came at Burton Albion, where he resigned after less than two years as manager with the team bottom of League One having started the 2022-23 season with one point from seven matches.

The 50-year-old, who enjoyed a fine playing career including 23 caps with the Netherlands, has also managed Royal Antwerp, Queens Park Rangers and Northampton.

Talks are said to be progressing well and it is possible Hasselbaink’s appointment could be confirmed in the coming days.

Southgate is set to name his latest England squad on Thursday for matches against Italy and Ukraine later this month.
