Neymar closes in on Pele's record

In Vinicius and Neymar lie Brazil‘s hopes of lifting their sixth World Cup in December in Qatar. The Real Madrid player represents the new generation, while the PSG forward, surrounded by some criticism in his country, represents the old guard who have to take the big step to lift the coveted trophy.

Together, the attacking duo managed to overcome a stubborn Japan to 1-0 thanks to Neymar’s strike.

Neymar came off the bench to score the decisive penalty on 76 minutes to give the Selecao the win.

With 74 goals, 19 from the spot, he is well ahead of Ronaldo‘s 62 and is within touching distance of Pele‘s 77, Brazil’s record scorer.

With 119 caps to his name, he is also in the same league as Dani Alves (125) and Roberto Carlos (125) but perhaps too far behind Cafu (142).

Brazil head towards Qatar in form, with just one defeat since 2020, which was to Argentina, in the final of the Copa America.
