Government grants ISI authority to monitor calls and messages

The federal government has granted ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) approval to intercept or trace citizens’ phone calls.

ISI will also have the authority to intercept or trace citizens’ messages. The cabinet approved the summary of this decision through circulation.

According to the summary, the decision has been made in the interest of national security in light of potential criminal threats.

The cabinet’s decision states that the agency’s designated officer will have the authority to intercept or trace phone calls.

The agency cannot appoint an officer below grade 18 for this task.

The cabinet has granted this authority under section 54 of the Pakistan Telecommunication Act of 1996.
