Tennis star Andy Murray hasn’t even started his run at the BNP Paribas Open yet, and already he suffered a loss, and it stinks.
Murray posted on Instagram on Thursday morning that overnight, someone stole the tennis shoes he had practiced in Wednesday, and attached to those shoes was his wedding ring.
Murray explained that his shoes got so sweaty and stinky in the heat Wednesday during practice that he couldn’t leave them in his car or his hotel room. To let them dry out, he left them under his car in the parking lot of his hotel room. At some point during the night they were taken.
At first he said he thought of it as a minor inconvenience and he purchased new tennis shoes to use for the tournament. Only later did he realize that his wedding ring was attached to the stolen shoes. He ties his wedding ring to his shoes when plays tennis, because he can’t have it on his hand.
He explained the entire saga in a two-part Instagram post:
“Got a quick story for you need a little bit of help with. Basically, last night after dinner here at Indian Wells, got back in the car to go back to the hotel and the car didn’t smell great. Basically I’d left my tennis shoes in there … my tennis shoes are pretty damp, sweaty and yes, smelly. So I decided when I got back to the hotel the shoes needed some air. I had no balcony so I thought I’m going to leave the shoes underneath the car to get some air and dry out overnight.
“When I got back to the car in the morning the shoes were gone. So my tennis shoes for the tournament were gone, so I had to go to a local pro shop and buy different shoes to what I normally wear different brand and everything, which isn’t the end of the world but obviously not ideal. Anyway as I was preparing for my practice my physio said to me ‘Where’s your wedding ring?’ and i was like ‘Oh no.’ I tie my wedding ring to my tennis shoes when I’m playing because I cant play with it on my hand. So yeah, my wedding ring has been stolen as well. Needless to say I’m in the bad books at home. So I want to try and find it. So if anyone can share this or may have any clue where they ay be would be very helpful so I can try and get it back. It would be much appreciated.”
Murray, who was married to Kim Sears in 2015, is slated to play his first match in this year’s BNP Paribas Open.
His said in his Instagram post that “I’m an idiot and in hindsight it seems like a terrible idea” before going into his saga.
It’s not clear what hotel Murray is staying at.
