NFL DFS, Preseason Week 1: Best DraftKings, FanDuel daily Fantasy football picks for Saturday, August 14

The first full week of the 2021 NFL preseason will have its busiest day on Saturday with 10 games on the schedule. It’ll be the first game of the exhibition season for all 20 teams lacing it up, and that means we’re unlikely to see starters receiving much playing time. That dramatically impacts the strategy for setting your NFL DFS lineups and forces you to look for young players with a lot to prove who are in a position to receive larger amounts of playing time.

The Saints quarterback battle is still neck-and-neck entering their preseason opener against the Ravens on Saturday evening. That means you’ll likely see both Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill. But will either get enough reps to warrant inclusion, or should you be looking elsewhere in the NFL DFS player pool? Before locking in any 2021 NFL Preseason Week 1 DFS picks for Saturday, be sure to check out the NFL DFS advice, player rankings, stacks and top daily Fantasy football picks from SportsLine’s Scott Engel.

Engel is a prime source to consult for DFS success. He’s an inaugural member of the Fantasy Sports Writers Association’s Hall of Fame and has been a premier analyst and Fantasy personality for 25 years.

He is a four-time FSWA Award Winner and 10-time nominee. In 2020, Engel was a finalist for the FSWA Fantasy Football Writer of the Year Award, which he also won previously. His expertise allows him to find the best DFS values and create optimal lineups that he shares only with members at SportsLine.

For the 2021 NFL Hall of Fame Game, Engel had Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins as one of his top picks. The result: Haskins went 8-for-13 for 54 yards, receiving the most playing time out of Pittsburgh’s quarterbacks. He outplayed starter Mason Rudolph, who committed a turnover, and anybody who had Haskins in their lineups was well on the way to a profitable day.

Now, Engel has turned his attention to Week 1 of the 2021 NFL Preseason and locked in his top daily Fantasy football picks for Saturday. You can only see them by heading to SportsLine.

Top Saturday NFL DFS picks for Preseason Week 1

For 2021 NFL Preseason Week 1 on Saturday, Engel is high on Packers quarterback Jordan Love at $6,000 on FanDuel and $5,500 on DraftKings. Despite the offseason drama, Aaron Rodgers showed up to Packers training camp and he’s the unquestioned starter. However, he’s also the defending NFL MVP, so the Packers won’t see much need risking him playing much, if at all, in the first game.

But the Packers do want to see as much of Love as possible to get a better handle on what they have in the former first-round pick and presumptive future of the franchise. Love threw for 8,600 yards and 60 touchdowns in three seasons as the starter at Utah State and Matt LaFleur prides himself on having a quarterback-friendly system, so Love should be given the shot to build confidence with plenty of easy throws on Saturday against the Texans.

Part of his optimal NFL DFS strategy also includes rostering Rams running back Jake Funk ($6,000 on FanDuel and $5,500 on DraftKings). When Cam Akers tore his Achilles, Darrell Henderson became the only back on the Rams roster with any meaningful game experience, and the search to find a second back to keep Henderson from taking on too heavy of a workload has focused on Funk and Xavier Jones.

Both will see a heavy dose of playing time on Saturday with the Rams taking on the Chargers, but Funk might have the edge as the drafted player (seventh-round pick) against the undrafted Jones. The former Maryland running back averaged 8.6 yards per carry as a senior and only had 158 touches in college, so the Rams shouldn’t have any qualms giving him a large dose of touches even in a meaningless preseason matchup.

How to set Saturday NFL DFS lineups for Preseason Week 1

Engel is also targeting a player who could go off for massive numbers on Saturday because of a dream matchup. This pick could be the difference between winning your tournaments and cash games or going home with nothing. You can only see who it is here.
