Turkey has started the third phase of clinical trials of the COVID-19 vaccine, dubbed “Turkovac” by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who said the syringe will be available for use by the end of the year.
Ankara currently administers vaccines developed by Sinovac, as well as Pfizer-BioNTech.
Turkey also granted permission for the emergency use of the vaccine to Russia’s Sputnik V.
“It is not clear how long this disease will last and how much mutation there will be. It is important that we have our own vaccine against this disease,” Erdogan said during an event on Tuesday to mark the first stage of the third vaccination. He volunteered the vaccine that uses an inactivated virus.
Turkey has sharply accelerated its coronavirus vaccination operations, delivering more than a million vaccines a day last week and boosting hopes for a recovery in the economy and tourism sector.
