Today we celebrate the success of the Figure Skating team as a part of our 2020 Mustangs Season of Celebration!
The Mustangs kicked off an exciting season with a 2nd place finish at their first competition of the season at Carleton University back in November. Denis Margalik, both a coach and a skater, placed 1st in Open Men’s Freeskate, defeating his opponents by an impressive 15 points. Fourth-year Anna Cappuccitti also placed 1st in her category, while skaters Natalie Li, Madison Shaw, Julia LaBella, and Clara Campbell all placed 3rd. Alexa Shelley competed in the Gold Solo Dance category for the first time, taking home 2nd place.
In January, the Mustangs wrapped up a two-day competition in Aylmer for the Winter Invitational, once again going home with a 2nd place trophy for the team. Clara Campbell placed 1st in her category, while the dynamic duo of Jazz Smyl Joly and Alexa Shelley, former Gold medalists at the 2019 OUAs, took 1st place in the Gold Ice Dance category. The team also placed 2nd in the Synchronized Skating category.
The Mustangs wrapped up a successful season with four Gold medals from the OUA Championships and a team Silver as a marker of their achievements. Western’s Golds came from the Star 10 Similar Dance, Dance Fours, Pairs Fours, and Men’s Freeskate. The Mustangs also picked up 2 Silver medals as well as 5 Bronzes for their performances. Deni Margalik, Jazz Smyl Joly, and Alexa Shelley were all named OUA All-Stars for their performances.
This year’s Most Valuable player is Clara Campbell.
2020 Graduating Ring Recipients are Sarah Burns, Denis Margalik, Alexa Shelley, and Jazz Smyl Joly, with Bronze W’s being awarded to Melissa Brandie and Natalie Li.
