Lyon, France – Young Dane Clara Towson continued her impressive form at the Lyon Open, beating seventh seed Paula Padosa of Spain 7-5 6-1 to place her first career final against teammate Victoria Julubic.
Golubic caused another surprise by defeating second seed Fiona Ferro 4-6, 6-0, 7-6 (4) in the sixth career semifinal for Switzerland.
Towson had seven aces, and although she dropped her serve twice, the 18-year-old broke Badusa five times in order to maintain her perfect career as the only player not to drop a group in the indoor tournament.
“I kept my cool and calm.” After the first semi-final of her career, Towson said, “I don’t think much about tomorrow.” “I’m just going there and having fun as I have in all the matches so far.”
Towson, ranked 139, is a former champion in the Australian Open Junior Championships. Her performance here at Lyon was even more impressive considering she reached two qualifying rounds, then had to face top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round.
“I think I didn’t play as well today as I did on the other days,” Towson said. “I just tried to stay in the game.” “Even though my level may have been 10% lower than the other days, I still feel very comfortable and won a lot of points.”
Towson has played “several times” in the past with fellow countryman Caroline Wozniacki, who ranked # 1 in 2010 and won the Australian Open out of 30 titles in her career.
“We know each other … but it doesn’t mean we’re close or anything else,” said Towson. “We came from different (ages) in Danish tennis and she lives in the United States of America.”
The 28-year-old Golubek was ranked 130th and also came through two rounds of qualifying rounds here.
Ferro broke her 6-5 and served in the match. Golubek broke again to force a tiebreaker and won on her first point of the match to reach her career final for the third time and the first since losing to Linz in Austria in October 2016.
Golubic won its only professional title in July of that year, on the clay courts in Gstaad.
